Paintings, Prints, and Illustrated Books of the Floating World

Sebastian Izzard LLC Asian Art held an exhibition of Paintings, Prints, and Illustrated Books of the Floating World from March 12 to 18, 2016 at their gallery on East 76th Street. A selection of eighteenth and nineteenth century “floating world” paintings, woodblock prints, and illustrated books depicting beauties, actors, and genre scenes were featured.

A well-preserved impression of Toshusai Sharaku’s (active 1794–95) bust portrait of Osagawa Tsuneyo II as Osan, Ippei’s Elder Sister highlighted the show.  Among the illustrated books were Yakusha Konotegashiwa (Actors among the Garden Oaks) published in 1799, a single volume containing thirty-one double-page half-length portraits of actors in roles by the Osaka artist Shokosai Hambei (active 1795–1809), and a fine copy of Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760–1849) two-volume book Toto shokei ichiran (Famous Places of the Eastern Capital at a Glance).

A rare complete album of Yashima Gakutei’s (1786–1868) Naniwa meisho Tempozan shokei ichiran (Famous Places of Osaka: Views of Mount Tempo at a Glance) with original covers and title slip was also on view.

JADA 2016: An Exhibition by the Japanese Art Dealers Association

March 12—14, 2016

Sebastian Izzard LLC also exhibited at JADA 2016: An Exhibition by the Japanese Art Dealers Association during Asia Week as part of the JADA’s annual collaborative exhibition. The show was held at the Ukrainian Institute of America, 2 E. 79 St. in New York, for three days only, from March 12 through March 14.

A superb group of Meiji era paintings by Kawanabe Kyosai (1831–1889), Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891), and Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was on view.

Izzard also brought several unique and unusual examples of Japanese porcelain to the exhibition. A large Aode-Kokutani dish decorated with a lotus plant, a rare Imari dish from the Nangawara kilns, and several examples of fine Nabeshima porcelain were featured.
