Teraoka Masami and His Source Imagery: Hokusai, Eisen, Kunisada

Sebastian Izzard LLC Asian Art will exhibit works by the Japanese-American artist Teraoka Masami from the collection of the well-known Hong Kong-based graphic designer Henry Steiner, along with woodblock prints by nineteenth century ukiyo-e artists Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) Keisai Eisen (1790-1848), and Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865). Attracted by the flat, solid-color shapes of Western pop art and the mannered figures and bold colors of Japanese woodblock prints, Teraoka combines elements from both genres in his finely rendered watercolor paintings. Early series’ such as McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan reflect Teraoka’s fascination with the nineteenth century masters Hokusai and Kunisada, blending the decadent and erotic art form of ukiyo-e with modern consumerist culture.
